I'm hearing some things about this new guy Tony Jaa. Apparently this movie is mediocre at best, but this guy's supposed to have serious skills. The trailers and teasers I've seen thus far have certainly been promising. Has anyone seen it? Are the comparisons to Bruce Lee a) somewhat based in reality, b) overblown, or c) way overblown?

MOSTAR, Bosnia-Hercegovina (AFP) - A new statue honouring late martial arts legend Bruce Lee was vandalised hours after it was unveiled in this southern Bosnian city, police and witnesses said.

"We have received reports that the statue has been damaged. We are currently investigation the incident," a police officer in Mostar said.

The life-size bronze statue of the kung fu cinema icon in a defensive position holding nun chucks, part of kung fu equipment, was unveiled during an emotional ceremony here Saturday.

The chain and one of the nun chucks' sticks were missing and empty wine bottles were scattered around the statue in a city park, according to an AFP reporter.

Several dozen citizens gathered in the park on Sunday morning and expressed their disgust.

"It is a crime!" said one.

"Once again we've shown what Balkan savageness is!" lamented another in disbelief.

The park's nightkeeper, Veljo Dojcinovic, told AFP he saw a group of teenage hooligans entering the park in the middle of the night.

"I heard a loud bang but I was alone and I couldn't stop them. Police should have been more agile. They know that hooligans visit this park regularly," he said.

Lee was chosen as a hero that all ethnic groups could relate to in a city that remains bitterly divided after fierce fighting between Croats and Muslims during the country's 1992-95 war.

In a rare show of unity some 300 Bosnian Croats and Muslims attended the unveiling ceremony.

"Bruce Lee 1940-1973. Your Mostar" is the only text written on the base of the statue.

Earlier Sunday a bronze statue to the late martial arts legend was unveiled in Hong Kong in a ceremony on what would have been Lee's 65th birthday.

I found a great JKD teacher in SF. He has a school in the sunset district at a fairly nice facility. I'm in berkeley so it's a bit out of the way but I really like Dr. Zee Lo the teacher and the students/overall vibe of the place was great.

Check out the website for a little more info but don't judge to much by the site, it looks cheesy to me and I don't think it represents well at all. in fact I plan on producing a promotional video for the school since I like it so much and the site just doesn't do it justice.

the prices are very reasonable so go check it out and when you do tell him that Chris sent you or at least mention where you heard about this.

Enter Star of the Century

Bruce Lee's extensive and well documented pioneering Martial Arts legacy and his unfinished works in the field of philosophy will live on despite those haters from way back with their piss poor attempts to tarnish the message, his wisdom. I'm sure Bruce would have wanted to be widely known for much more than just "Star of the Century". Still he gets props and recognition from those who perceive.

---------

Bruce Lee has been named Star of the Century at an awards ceremony in Hong Kong to mark 100 years of Chinese cinema.

Shannon Lee, daughter of the kung fu legend, who died in 1973, collected the award at a glittering ceremony in Hong Kong Sunday evening.

Lee told the audience at the Hong Kong Film Awards: "I hope people can remember his philosophy. My father's spirit lives on - he made us remember him."

Bruce Lee - whose films included Enter the Dragon and Fist of Fury - is also to have a statue built in his honour on the Avenue of Stars on Hong Kong's harbour front, the ceremony heard.

The tributes, three decades after his death, come after a long period during which officials in Hong Kong have shunned Lee, seeing him as a bad influence on young people.

Rumours of drug taking and his liaison with a film starlet shortly before his death tainted his legacy in Hong Kong, although he has became a martial arts icon around the world.

A survey last year found that despite the official disapproval of Lee, he remains the number one male icon among Hong Kong children, finishing ahead of Jackie Chan and David Beckham in a school poll.
AdvertisementAdvertisement

Lee died in mysterious circumstances after apparently falling unconscious at an actress's home in Hong Kong in 1973. He was 32 years old.

There are no memorials to him in Hong Kong yet and repeated attempts by fans to have a museum opened in his memory have been blocked by officials.

The home he spent his final years at in the city's Kowloon district has been sold and converted into a "love hotel" where men take mistresses and prostitutes for sex.

Bruce Lee's abdominal routine

Bruce Lee's abdominal routine
from Blackbelt magazine

Of all the body parts Bruce Lee developed, his abdominal muscles were the most spectacular: rock solid to the touch, deeply cut and highly defined. Bruce believed the abdominals were one of the most important muscle groups for a martial artist since virtually every movement requires some degree of abdominal work. Perhaps more importantly, the "abs" are like a shell, protecting your ribs and vital organs. Lee was more than merely a fitness fanatic; he was an extremist, always in search of new ways to push his body to the limit, constantly tuning it while striving to achieve maximum efficiency. He felt many martial artists of his day lacked the necessary physical fitness to back up their skill. In his book Tao of Jeet Kune Do, he wrote "Training is one of the most neglected phases of athletics. Too much time is given to the development of skill and too little to the development of the individual for participation." Black Belt magazine owner Mito Uyehara recalls that "Bruce always felt that if your stomach was not developed, then you had no business doing any hard sparring." Lee's wife, Linda Lee Cadwell, claims her former husband "was a fanatic about ab training. He was always doing sit-ups, crunches, Roman chair movements, leg raises and V-ups."
According to some of Lee's early training notes, his daily abdominal workout included:
Waist twists - four sets of 90 repetitions.
Sit-up twists - four sets of 20 repetitions.
Leg raises - four sets of 20 repetitions.
Leaning twists - four sets of 50 repetitions.
Frog kicks - four sets of 50 repetitions.

Lee further developed this routine, adding additional sets of sit-ups, side bends, leg raises, "flags," twists and back bends to his abdominal workout regimen. The "flag" exercise was a particularly difficult drill Lee devised for working the abdominal. While lying on a bench, he would grasp attached uprights with both hands and raise himself, supported only by his shoulders. Then, with his knees locked straight and his lower back raised off the bench, he would perform leg raises. Bolo Yeung, Lee's co-star in Enter the Dragon, recalls seeing his friend perform this exercise with just his shoulder blades resting on the end of the bench, and with his legs and torso suspended horizontally off of it. "He was able to keep himself perfectly horizontal in midair!" Yeung notes. Of course, Lee's washboard stomach did not come from mere abdominal training; he was also a zealous proponent of cardiovascular conditioning and would regularly run, jump rope and ride a stationary bicycle. A typical Lee run covered a distance of two to six miles and was accomplished in 15 to 45 minutes. According to Lee's friend and fellow actor Bob Wall, "Bruce was pretty much a five-mile runner, but then Bruce was one of those guys who I just challenged the heck out of himself. He ran backward, and he ran wind sprints where he'd run a mile, walk a mile, run a mile...." Lee would alternate running with stationary bicycling, which, according to Uyehara, he'd ride for 45 minutes (about 10 miles). Lee's student, Herb Jackson, remembers another, more unorthodox method Lee used to increase his muscle definition. According to Jackson, Lee would wear a type of sauna belt when riding his stationary bicycle because he believed the belt focused heat on his abdominal muscles and helped reduce fat. Another element in Lee's quest for abdominal definition was nutrition. According to Linda Lee Cadwell, soon after he moved to the United States, Bruce started to take nutrition seriously and developed an interest in health foods and high-protein drinks. "Several times a day, he took a high-protein drink made up of powdered milk, ice water, eggs, eggshells, bananas, vegetable oil, peanut flour and chocolate ice cream," recalls Cadwell, who claims Bruce's waist fluctuated between 26 and 28 inches. "He also drank his own juice concoctions made from vegetables and fruits apples, celery, carrots and so on, prepared in an electric blender. Lee ate lean meat sparingly and consumed large amounts of fruits and vegetables. In later years, he became very knowledgeable about vitamin supplements, and each day apportioned himself exactly the right quota of vitamins A, B,C,D and E.

The Philosophy of Bruce Lee

Good little read.

===============================================================

~ Philosopher ~

Bruce Lee's martial art could not have been as successful and complete without the deep philosophical base he gave it. Martial arts, by nature, are a reflective practice where the practitioner must not only examine the issues of life or death but the nature of the self.

One of the most important influences on Bruce was his exposure to Taoist philosophy. Taoist philosophy is the development of the Chinese sage Lao Tzu, who in the sixth century BC wrote the definitive work on the subject, the Tao Te Ching.

Bruce, at the age of seventeen, had been training in gung fu for four years with Sifu Yip Man, yet had reached an impasse. When engaged in sparring Bruce found that his body would become tense, his mind perturbed. Such instability worked against his goal of efficiency in combat.

Sifu Yip Man sensed his trouble, and approached him. "Lee," he said, "relax and calm your mind. Forget about yourself and follow the opponent's movements. Let your mind, the basic reality, do the counter-movement without any interfering deliberation. Above all, learn the art of detachment."

Bruce Lee believed he had the answer to his problem. He must relax! Yet there was a paradox: the effort in trying to relax was inconsistent with the effortlessness in relaxing, and Bruce found himself back in the same situation.

Again Sifu Yip Man came to Bruce and said, "Lee, preserve yourself by following the natural bends of things and don't interfere. Remember never to assert yourself: never be in frontal opposition to any problem, but control it by swinging with it."

Sifu Yip Man told Bruce to go home for a week and think about his words. Bruce spent many hours in meditation and practice, with nothing coming of it. Finally, Bruce decided to go sailing in a junk (boat). Bruce would have a great
epiphany. "On the sea, I thought of all my past training and got mad at myself and punched the water. Right then at that moment, a thought suddenly struck me. Wasn't this water the essence of gung fu? I struck it, but it did not suffer hurt. I then tried to grasp a handful of it but it was impossible. This water, the softest substance, could fit into any container. Although it seemed weak, it could penetrate the hardest substance. That was it! I wanted to be like the nature of water.

"Therefore, in order to control myself I must accept myself by going with, and not against, my nature. I lay on the boat and felt that I had untied with Tao; I had become one with nature."

Bruce lay back in the boat and let it drift of its own accord. He was, at that moment, at peace with himself and his environment.

Bruce had not only discovered the state of wu-shin, or no-mindedness; he had come to see his unity with the Tao itself. The Tao would become a great influence in his later life when he developed his art of Jeet Kune Do.

"When he was in Seattle Bruce used to quote Confucius and Lao Tzu and all those people like that, and he believed it," says Taky Kimura, Bruce's senior student and best friend. "But pretty soon he made that transition himself and he became the philosopher."

In 1963 Bruce published a book titled Chinese Gung Fu: The Philosophical Art of Self-Defense. The book expressed his views on gung fu as well as his deep interest in the philosophical aspects of martial arts training.

Another big influence on Bruce Lee, philosophically, was the Brahmin philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti. Bruce found that Krishnamurti's viewpoints on life ran parallel to his own. In his book Freedom from the Know, Krishnamurti writes: "You cannot look through an ideology, through a screen of words, through hopes and fears. The man who is really serious, with the urge to find out what truth is has no concept at all. He lives only in what is." Bruce adapted this idea in forming his martial art philosophy: "You cannot express and be alive through static put-together form, through stylized movement. The man who is really serious, with the urge to find out what truth is, has no style at all. He lives only in what is."

"A classicist or traditionalist will only do what the teacher tells him and that's it. The teacher is pedestalized and you do what he says and you don't question him," says John Little, the historian of the Bruce Lee Estate, "but Bruce was drawing from some very diverse sources, such as gestalt therapy, Krishnamurti, etc. Not that these people were necessarily creators either, but they saw a certain truth that they wrote about. Bruce saw that same truth."

~ Recollections ~

Leo Fong, a Methodist minister, movie director, and former student of Bruce Lee's, remembers a conversation he had with Bruce in 1964. "Bruce asked me, 'Why are you taking all these gung fu classes?'

"I said, 'Well, I'm looking for the ultimate.'

"Bruce let out a big laugh. He said, "Man, there ain't no ultimate! The ultimate is within you!'

"It took me a while to let go of the old beliefs, the old crutches. When I got around to letting go and started to train on my own I realized what Bruce had imparted to me. It's frightening being your own teacher. The only way you can find the cause of your own ignorance, he said, is self-evaluation and total commitment to your own process toward growth."

Bruce's Los Angeles Chinatown student Bob Bremer remembers Bruce relating to him the story of the "Chinese Woodcutter". "The old Chinese woodcutter was out in the forest chopping wood," said Bruce. "He's chopping the wood and chopping the wood and pretty soon the bushes start rattling and the trees start vibrating. He looks over there, the bushes part and out steps a dragon. The Chinese woodcutter says to himself, Golly! I always thought they were just stories! This is real! If I could capture it or kill it I could be famous! I wouldn't have to cut wood anymore!

"So he took his ax and takes a step toward the dragon. The dragon turns and says, 'Oh oh oh. I know what you're thinking. If you take another step toward me I'm going to breathe fire all over you and burn you to a cinder.'

"The woodcutter thinks, He can read my mind! He knows what I'm thinking before I even do it! It's hopeless! I might as well go back to chopping wood!

"So he goes back to chopping his wood and he's chopping and chopping. In the middle of one of his swings the ax flies out of his hand and hits the dragon right between the eyes. Kills him."

"Bruce never told me what he meant by that story," says Bremer. "For months I was thinking, What was he trying to tell me? I'm going over there to learn a physical thing and he's messing with my mind! What the hell is going on?"

Bruce believed that he could not teach his students so much as point them in the direction of knowledge. "I cannot teach you, " Bruce mused to James Franciscus in the television series Longstreet, "only help you to explore yourself."

"He actually was one of the very few that applied the philosophy to the art," said student Dan Inosanto. "Everything he taught was like 'Be soft yet not yielding. Firm yet not hard.' I was thinking, what the hell does that mean?"

Inosanto was not alone when it came to being confused by Bruce's philosophical nature. "He often spoke in parables," says author Joe Hyams.

One of Bruce's favorite parables was the story of the western scholar who came to Japan to learn about Zen from an old Zen master. As the story goes, the two sat down to introductory tea, and it became evident after a few minutes that the western scholar was more interested in telling the Zen master what he knew than learning anything from him. As the Zen master poured the tea for his guest, the scholar continued to ramble on. The tea began to spill over the edges of the cup; the Zen master continued pouring. "Sir!" said the western scholar. "The cup is over-full!"

"Yes," replied the Zen master, "and like this cup you too are over-filled with your own ideas and opinions. How do you expect to learn if you are not willing to empty your cup?"

Bruce would often quote this parable to his students. He encouraged them to speak up if they had a difference of opinion in his teachings but, if pushed too long, he would say, "At least empty your cup and try." Bruce believed that you should not dismiss something out of hand without first investigating it for yourself.

Bruce also felt that, "Knowing is not enough; you must apply." It was his opinion that knowledge is useless if it is not put to good use. More importantly, one can never determine the value of knowledge if it is not tested.

Bruce embodied the Taoist concept of tzu jan, or honest self-expression. Because he refused to subordinate himself to one style of fighting, he was free to be open and critical of all fighting concepts, including his own. This part of Bruce's character caused the greatest conflict between himself and others, especially martial artists who are often trained to accept the teachings of their instructor without question. Indeed, the term master, used in many martial arts styles to denote the teacher or leader of the school, implies absolute and unquestioning authority.

Bruce's personal expression of martial arts was something that he believed was unique to him and him alone, because it was the product of his personal attributes and deficiencies. Dan Inosanto said, "The total picture Bruce Lee wanted to present to his pupil was that, above everything else, he must find his own way. It is important to remember that Bruce Lee was a 'pointer' to the truth and not the truth itself."

For Bruce all knowledge led to self-knowledge. Bruce placed a great deal of emphasis on this belief in his teachings. It was one of the most important concepts he derived from his study of Krishnamurti. As Krishnamurti said: "We must first understand ourselves in order to know anything and to understand and solve problems." Bruce felt that, for a person to grow and evolve, they must come to know themselves through whatever medium they choose: dance, music, art, or martial arts to name a few.

Perhaps in the end it will be the philosophy of Bruce Lee that has the greatest importance in a historical perspective. Bruce has influenced generations since his passing with his concepts of liberation from classical thought, bending to adversity, economy of action, and openness to learn. These are concepts that will greatly benefit people of all doctrines, disciplines, and vocations.

Bruce lee's best friend Taky Kimura sees the effect Bruce has had on people every time he goes to Seattle's Lakeview Cemetery to tend to Bruce's grave. "I go up to the cemetery all the time and I see these people up there and many of them aren't even martial artists, but they're up there. They're up there looking for something within themselves. When you look at all these people out there who claim that they aren't role models, they are role models because they are in the limelight. But Bruce is a guy that, twenty-six years later, that cemetery is so trodden that they just put new sod up there. You watch, in a few months it will be worn out again. When I go up there I usually bump into somebody and I try not to be forward but I usually introduce myself. I ask them why they are up there and they tell me these things, you know, and it's just incredible the inspiration Bruce is creating, aiding these people."

Bruce Lee monument in Bosnia

Every country should do something like this..

Bruce Lee Lives - Say werd indeed!

--------

Bosnia to build Bruce Lee monument
15:53 AEST Thu Sep 2 2004

AP - In Bosnia, where one man's hero is often another man's villain, some citizens have decided to honour a man Serbs, Croats and Muslims can all look up to - kung fu great Bruce Lee.

Lee is best remembered for single-handedly taking on dozens of bad guys in a series of kung fu flicks. But the statue of the Chinese action hero in the ethnically divided city of Mostar is intended to remind people of Lee's lesser known values -"loyalty, friendship, skill and justice," said Veselin Gatalo, a writer who helped come up with the idea.

Lee played in a series of Hong Kong films in the early 1970s that propelled him to stardom first in Asia, then Europe and eventually the United States.

His Hollywood debut came in 1973 with the hugely popular "Enter the Dragon," a box office success Lee never lived to witness. He died a month before the film hit US theatres of a swelling of the brain. He only 32-years-old at the time.

But can a monument to a karate-chopping, high-kicking B-movie star unite Mostar, a town that was both physically and psychologically scarred in Bosnia's 1992-95 war? Even now, Roman Catholic Croats and Muslims still live apart, sending their children to different schools, watching their own television stations and cheering for rival soccer teams.

"Lee is a true international hero and is a hero to all ethnicities in Bosnia and that's why we picked him," Gatalo said.

Bosnia's war killed hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Croats and Muslims and left the country divided into a Serb republic and a Muslim-Croat federation.

In Mostar at least, Gatalo, an ethnic Croat, hopes a statue to Lee will help erase the city's tarnished image as a place of bitter ethnic rivalries.

"We want that people, when you say Mostar, respond: 'that's the city that has a monument to Bruce Lee,"' Gatalo said.

Gatalo and a friend, Nino Raspudic, grew up on Bruce Lee movies. They persuaded Boris Jovanovic, a sculptor from Mostar, to create the statue of Lee "as if he was alive and kicking."

They hope to install the statue by November this year and invite Lee's wife, Linda Lee to the opening ceremony, Gatalo said.

The site picked for the statue is symbolic - the Spanish Square, in the centre of the divided city some 70km south of the capital Sarajevo

The Lost Interview!

Apparently this is described as "vintage Lee" by friends, family and students. The "Lost" Interview is classic Lee material and is also the only surviving interview on film. Here you have it complete as Bruce is interviewed by Canadian journalist Pierre Berton.

This post is long, hope someone enjoys it as much as I did.

Peace!

----------

Bruce Lee "The lost interview"

Pierre Burton: Well how can you play in Mandarin movies if you don't even speak Mandarin?

Bruce Lee: Well first of all, I speak only Cantonese.

Pierre: Yeah.

Bruce Lee: So, I mean, there is quite a difference as pronunciation and things like that is concerned.

Pierre: So somebody else's voice is used right?

Bruce Lee: Definitely, definitely!!

Pierre: So you just make the words...doesn't that sound strange when you go to the movies, especially in Hong Kong, your home town, and you see yourself with somebody else's voice?

Bruce Lee: Well not really, you see, because most of the mandarin pictures here are dubbed anyway.

Pierre: They're dubbed anyway?

Bruce Lee: Anyway. I mean in this regard, they shoot without sound. So it doesn't make any difference.

Pierre: Your lips never quite make the right words, do they?

Bruce Lee: Yeah, well that's where the difficulty lies, you see. I mean in order to....the Cantonese have a different way of saying things....I mean different from the mandarin. So I have to find, like, something similar to that in order to keep a kind of a feeling going behind that (in my films). Something, you know, matching the mandarin deal. Does it sound complicated?

Pierre: Just like in the silent picture days (the old silent days). I gather that in the movies made here the dialogue is pretty stilted anyway.

Bruce Lee: Yeah, I agree with you. I mean, see, to me, a motion picture is motion. I mean, you've got to keep the dialogue down to the minimum.

Pierre: Did you look at mainly Mandarin movies before you started playing in your first one?

Bruce Lee: Yes.

Pierre: What did you think of them?

Bruce Lee: Quality wise, I mean, I would have to admit that it's not quite up to the standard. However, it is growing and it is getting higher and higher and going toward that standard that I would term quality.

Pierre: They say the secret of your success in that movie, the "Big Boss", that was such a success here, and rocketed you to stardom in Asia, was that you did your own fighting.

Bruce Lee: Uh-huh.

Pierre: As an expert in the various martial arts in China, what did you think of the fighting that you saw in the movies that you studied before you became a star?

Bruce Lee: Well, I mean, definitely in the beginning, I had no intention whatsoever, that what I was practicing, and what I'm still practicing now would lead to this, to begin with. But martial art has had a very, very deep meaning as far as my life is concerned because, as an actor, as a martial artist, as a human being, all these I have learned from martial art.

Pierre: Maybe for our audience who doesn't know what it means, you might be able to explain what exactly you mean by martial art?

Bruce Lee: Right. martial art includes all the combative arts like Karate...

Pierre: Judo.

Bruce Lee: ...or Karate, Judo (agrees), Chinese Gung-fu, or Chinese boxing, whatever you call it. All those, you see, like, Aikido, Korean Karate, and on and on and on. But it's a combative form of fighting. I mean some of them became sport, but some of them art still not. I mean some of them use, for intense, kicking to the groin, jabbing fingers to the eyes, things like that.

Pierre: No wonder you're successful in it! The Chinese movies are full of this kind of action anyway...they needed a guy like you! (they both laugh)

Bruce Lee: Violence, man!

Pierre: So you didn't have to use a double when you moved into the motion picture role here.

Bruce Lee: No.

Pierre: You did it all yourself?

Bruce Lee: Right.

Pierre: Can you break five or six pieces of wood with your hand or foot?

Bruce Lee: I'd probably break my hand and foot! (they both laugh)

Pierre: Tell me a little bit....you set up a school in Hollywood didn't you?

Bruce Lee: Yes.

Pierre: For people like James Garner, Steve McQueen and the others.

Bruce Lee: Yes.

Pierre: Why would they want to learn Chinese martial art? Because of a movie role?

Bruce Lee: Not really. Most of them you see, to me at least, the way that I teach it, all types of knowledge ultimately man self-knowledge. Therefore, these people are coming in and asking me to teach them, not so much how to defend themselves, or how to do somebody in, rather, they want to learn to express themselves through some movement, be it anger, be it determination or whatever. So, in other words, what I'm saying therefore, is that they're paying me to show them, in combative form, the art of expressing the human body.

Pierre: Which is acting, in a sense, isn't it?

Bruce Lee: well......

Pierre: or would be a useful tool for an actor....

Bruce Lee: It might sound too philosophical, but it's unacting acting or acting unacting....if you know...

Pierre: You've lost me!

Bruce Lee: I have huh? So what I'm saying, actually, you see, it's a combination of both. I mean here is natural instinct and here is control. You are to combine the two in harmony. Not...if you have one to the extreme, you'll be very unscientific. If you have another to the extreme, you become, all of a sudden, a mechanical man...no longer a human being. So it is a successful combination of both, so therefore, it's not pure naturalness, or unnaturalness. The ideal is unnatural naturalness, or natural unnaturalness.

Pierre: Yin/yang, eh?

Bruce Lee: Right man, that's it.

Pierre: One of your students, James Coburn , played in a movie called "Our Man Flint", in which he used Karate. Was that what he learned from you?

Bruce Lee: He started training with me after the film. Not...

Pierre: So he learned after he played in "Our Man Flint".

Bruce Lee: Right. Right. You see, actually, I do not teach, you know, Karate, because I do not believe in styles anymore. I mean I do not believe that there is such thing as, like, a Chinese way of fighting or a Japanese way of fighting...or whatever way of fighting, because unless a human being has three arms and four legs, there can be no different form of fighting. But, basically, we only have two hands and two feet. So styles tend to, not only separate man because they have their own doctrines and the doctrine became the gospel truth that you cannot change! But, if you do not have styles, if you just say, "here I am as a human being, how can I express myself totally and completely?" ...now that way, you won't create a style because style is a crystallization. That way is a process of continuing growth.

Pierre: You talk about Chinese boxing....how does it defer, from, say, our kind of boxing? (western)

Bruce Lee: Well, first we use the foot.

Pierre: Uh-huh, that's a start.

Bruce Lee: And then we use the elbow.

Pierre: Do you use the thumb too?

Bruce Lee: You name it man, we use it!

Pierre: You use it all?

Bruce Lee: You have to, you see, because that is the expression of the human body. I mean, everything, not just the hand! When you are talking about combat, well, if it is a sport..well now your talking about something else, with regulations, and rules..but if you're talking about fighting...

Pierre: No rules.....

Bruce Lee: ...with no rules, well then, baby, you'd better train every part of your body! And when you do punch..now I'm leaning forward a little bit hoping not to hurt any camera angle..I mean you've got to put the whole hip into it, and snap it! (Lee punches twice, very quickly) and get all your energy in there and make this into a weapon.

Pierre: I don't want to tangle with you on any dark night, I'll tell you that right now! You came at me pretty fast there! What is the difference between Chinese boxing and what we see these old men doing at eight o'clock every morning on the rooftops and he parks called 'shadowboxing'. Which they're always doing?

Bruce Lee: Well, actually, you see, that is part of Chinese boxing. There are as many schools, different schools...

Pierre: Everybody here seems to be going like this (moves in a tai-chi movement) all the time.

Bruce Lee: Well, that's good. I mean, I'm very glad, I'm very glad to see that because at least somebody is caring for their own bodies, right?

Pierre: Yeah.

Bruce Lee: I mean that's a good sign. Well it's kind of a slow form of exercise which is called tai-chi-chuan...I'm speaking mandarin just now...in Cantonese, 'Kai-di-kune', and it's more of an exercise for the elderly then the young.

Pierre: Give me a demonstration; show me, can you do a little bit of it?

Bruce Lee: (begins a seated demonstration of tai chi hand movements...) I mean, have-wise, it's very slow and you push it out but all the time you are keeping the continuity going; bending, stretching, everything. You just keep it moving.

Pierre: It looks like a ballet dancer there...

Bruce Lee: It is..I mean to them the idea is "running water never grows stale". So you've got to just "keep on flowing".

Pierre: Of all your students, famous, James Garner, Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin, James Coburn, Roman Polanski, which was the best? Who adapted best to this oriental form of exercise and defense?

Bruce Lee: Well, that depends...as a fighter, Steve..Steve McQueen..now, he is good in that department because, that son of a gun has got the toughness in him....

Pierre: I see it on the screen....

Bruce Lee: I mean, he would say, "all right baby, here I am, man", you know, and he'll do it! Now James Coburn is peace-loving man....

Pierre: I met him.

Bruce Lee: Right? I mean, you've met him....

Pierre: Yeah.

Bruce Lee: I mean he's really, really nice, and super mellow, and all that...

Pierre: Yeah, he is!

Bruce Lee: You know what I mean? Now he appreciates the philosophical part of it. Therefore, his understanding of it is deeper then Steve's. So it's really hard to say, you see what I'm saying now?

Pierre: I see....

Bruce Lee: I mean it's different, depending on what you see in it...

Pierre: It's interesting, we don't in our world, and haven't since the days of the Greeks who did, combined philosophy and art with sport. But quite clearly the oriental attitude is that the three are facets of the same thing.

Bruce Lee: Man, listen to me, ok? To me, ultimately, martial art means honestly expressing yourself. Now it is very difficult to do. I mean it is easy for me to put on a show and be cocky and be flooded with a cocky feeling and then feel, then, like pretty cool and all that. Or I can make all kinds of phony things, you see what I mean? And be blinded by it. Or I can show you some really fancy movement, but, to express oneself honestly, not lying to oneself....and to express myself honestly, that, my friend is very hard to do. And you have to train. You have to keep your reflexes so that when you want it...it's there! When you want to move, you are moving and when you move you are determined to move. Not taking one inch, not anything less than that! If I want to punch, I'm going to do it man, and I'm going to do it! So that is the type of thing you gave to train yourself into it; to become one with it. You think....(snaps his fingers) ....it is.

Pierre: This is very un-western, this attitude. I've been talking to Bruce Lee, mainly about the Chinese martial arts which include things like Chinese boxing, Karate and Judo, which is what he taught when he was in Hollywood after he left the university of Washington, where he studied, of all things, philosophy, if you can believe that. But he did but that, perhaps you understand why the two go together from the first half of this program and you can perhaps understand how he got into films, he knew a lot of actors but I'm told that you got the job on the "Green Hornet", where you played Kato the chauffeur mainly because you were the only Chinese-looking guy who could pronounce the name of the leading character, "Britt Reid"!

Bruce Lee: I meant that as a joke of course! And it's a heck of name, man! I mean every time I said it at that time I was super-conscious! I mean, really now, that's another interesting thing, huh? Lets say if you learn to speak Chinese...

Pierre: Yeah?

Bruce Lee: It's not difficult to learn and speak the words. The hard thing, the difficult thing, is behind what is the meaning: what brought on the expression and feelings behind those words. Like, then I first arrived in the United States and I looked at a Caucasian, and I really would not know whether he was putting me on or is he really angry? Because we have different ways of reacting to it...those are the difficult things, you see?

Pierre: Of course. It's almost as if you came upon a strange race where a smile didn't mean what it does to us. In fact, a smile doesn't always mean the same, does it?

Bruce Lee: Of course, not.

Pierre: Yeah, I just thought of that. Tell me about the big break when you played in Longstreet...

Bruce Lee: Ahh, that's it.

Pierre: I must tell our audience that Bruce lee had a bit part, or a supporting role in the Longstreet series and this had an enormous effect on the audience. What was it?

Bruce Lee: Well, you see, the title of that particular episode of Longstreet is called "The Way of the Intercepting Fist". Now I think the successful ingredient in it was because I was being Bruce lee.

Pierre: Yourself.

Bruce Lee: Myself, right. And did that part, just expressed myself, like I say, "honestly expressed myself", at that time. And I, because of that, brought, you know, favorable mentioning in, like, the New York times, which says, like, "a chinaman who, incidentally, came off quite convincingly enough to earn himself a television series" and so on and so on and so forth.

Pierre: Can you remember the key lines by stirling silliphant? The key lines?

Bruce Lee: He's one of my students, you know that?

Pierre: Was he too?

Bruce Lee: yes...

Pierre: Everybody's your student! But you read, there were some key lines there that expressed your philosophy. I don't know if you remember them or not....

Bruce Lee: Oh I remember them, I said....

Pierre: Let's hear...

Bruce Lee: This is what it is, ok?

Pierre: You're talking to Longstreet played by James Franciscus...

Bruce Lee: I said, "empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash! Be water, my friend'...like that, you see?

Pierre: Yeah, I see, I get the idea. I get the power behind it...

Bruce Lee: Uh-huh....

Pierre: So, now, two things have happened; first there's a pretty good chance that you'll get a TV series in the states called "The Warrior", isn't it? Where you use what--the martial arts in a western setting?

Bruce Lee: Well that was the original idea. Now Paramount, you know I did Longstreet for Paramount, and Paramount wants me to be in a television series. On the other hand, Warner brothers wants me to be in another one. But both of them, I think, they want me to be in a modernized type of a thing and they think that the western idea is out! Whereas I want....

Pierre: You want to do the western!

Bruce Lee: I want to do the western because, you see, I mean, or else can you justify all of this punching and kicking and violence except in the period of the west? I mean, nowadays, I mean you don't go around on the street, kicking and punching people....(pretends to reach into his jacket for a gun) because if you do....(pulls out his imaginary gun and pulls the trigger) Pow! that's it. I mean, I don't care how "good" you are.

Pierre: Yeah, a gun, but this is true also of the Chinese dramas, which are mainly costume dramas. they're all
full of blood and gore over here!

Bruce Lee: Oh you mean here?

Pierre: Yeah.

Bruce Lee: Well, unfortunately, that's often the case. You see, I hope that the picture I am in would either explain why the violence was done...whether right or wrong, or what not...but, unfortunately, pictures, most of them here, are done mainly just for the sake of violence. You know what I mean? Like, you know, guys fighting for 30 minutes straight, getting stabbed 50 times! (acts like he is stabbing himself and knocks his microphone off his shirt)

Pierre: Well I'm fascinated, here, let me give you your microphone back...

Bruce Lee: I am a martial artist....

Pierre: I'm fascinated that you came back to Hong Kong on the verge of success in Hollywood...and full of it..and suddenly, on the strength of one picture, you become a superstar. Everybody knows you. You have to change your phone number. You get mobbed in the streets. Now what are you going to do? Are you going to be able to live in both worlds? Are you going to be a superstar here or one in the States...or both?

Bruce Lee: Well, let me say this. First of all, the word "superstar" really turns me off...and I'll tell you why... the word "star" man, it's an illusion. It's something what the public calls you. You should look upon oneself as an actor, man. I mean you would be very pleased if somebody said (punches his fist into his open hand) "man, you are a super actor!" It is much better than, you know, superstar. therefore, i...

Pierre: Yes, but you've got to admit that you are a superstar. You're not going to....you're not going to....if you're going to give me the truth!

Bruce Lee: I am now....I am honestly saying this, okay? Yes, I have been very successful, okay?

Pierre: Yeah....

Bruce Lee: But I think the word "star" is....I mean I do not look upon myself as a star. I really don't. I mean believe me, man, when I say it. I mean I'm not saying it because....

Pierre: What are you going to do? Let's get back to the question.

Bruce Lee: (laughs) Ok.

Pierre: Are you going to stay in Hong Kong and be famous, or are you going to go to the United States and be famous, or are you going to try to eat your cake and have it too?

Bruce Lee: I am going to do both because, you see, I have already made up my mind that, in the United States, I think something about the oriental, I mean the true oriental, should be shown.

Pierre: Hollywood sure as heck hasn't!

Bruce Lee: You better believe it man. I mean it's always that pigtail, bouncing around, "chop-chop", you know? With the eyes slanted and all that. And I think that's very, very out of date.

Pierre: Is it true that the first job you had was being cast as Charlie Chan's "number one son?"

Bruce Lee: Yeah, "number one son". (they both laugh)

Pierre: They never made the movie?

Bruce Lee: No, they were going to make it into a new Chinese James bond type of a thing. Now that, you know, "the old man Chan is dead, Charlie is dead, and his son is carrying on".

Pierre: Oh I see. but they didn't do that.

Bruce Lee: No, Batman came along you see. And then everything started to go into that kind of a thing.

Pierre: Like the Green Hornet?

Bruce Lee: Yeah.

Pierre: Which you were in...

Bruce Lee: By the way, I did a really terrible job in that, I have to say.

Pierre: Really? You didn't like yourself in that?

Bruce Lee: Oh, no.

Pierre: I didn't see it. Let me ask you, however, about the problems that you face as a Chinese hero in an American series. Have people come up in the industry and said, "well we don't know how the audience are going to take a non-American"?

Bruce Lee: Well, such a question has been raised. in fact, it is being discussed and that is probably why the warrior is not going to be on.

Pierre: I see.

Bruce Lee: You see? Because, unfortunately, such a thing does exist in this world, you see. Like, I don't know, in a certain part of the country, right? Where they think that, business wise, it's a risk. And I don't blame them..I don't blame them. I mean, in the same way, it's like in Hong Kong, if a foreigner came and became a star, if I were the man with the money, I probably would have my own worry of whether or not the acceptance would be there. But that's all right because, if you honestly express yourself, it doesn't matter, see? Because you're going to do it!

Pierre: How about the other side of the coin? is it possible that you, I mean you're fairly hip, and fairly Americanized, are you too western for our oriental audiences do you think?

Bruce Lee: I..oh man!..Like how....I have been criticized for that!

Pierre: You have, eh?

Bruce Lee: Oh, definitely. Let me say this: when I do the Chinese film I'll try my best not to be as.....American as, you know, I have been adjusted to for the last 12 years in the States. But when I go back to the States, it seems to be the other way around, you know what I mean?

Pierre: You're too exotic, eh?

Bruce Lee: Yeah, man. I mean they're trying to get me to do too many things that are really for the sake of being exotic. You understand what I'm trying to say?

Pierre: Oh sure.

Bruce Lee: So, it's really, I mean....

Pierre: When you live in both worlds, it brings its problems as well as its advantages, and you've got them both. Let me ask you whether the change in attitude on the part of the Nixon administration towards China has helped your chances of starring in an American TV series?

Bruce Lee: (laughs) well, first of all, this happened before that. But I don't think that things of Chinese will be quite interesting for the next few years...I mean not that I'm politically inclining toward anything, you know, but...

Pierre: I understand that, but I was just wondering....

Bruce Lee: But I mean once the opening of China happens, you know, I mean that it will bring more understanding! More things that are, hey, like different, you know? And maybe in the contrast of comparison some new thing might grow. So, therefore, I mean it's a very rich period to be in. I mean like, if I were born, let's say 40 years ago and if I thought in my mind and said, "boy, I'm going to star in a television series in America", well...that might be a vague dream. But I think, right now, it may be, man.

Pierre: Do you still think of yourself as Chinese or do you ever think of yourself as a north American?

Bruce Lee: You know what I want to think of myself? As a human being. because, I mean I don't wan to sound like ask Confucius, sayyyyyy...(joking) but under the sky, under the heaven, man, there is but one family. Iit just so happens that people are different.

Pierre: Ok, we've got to go...thank you Bruce lee for coming here, and thank you for watching...

Bruce Lee: Thank you, Pierre, thank you.

Emcee Lee > Would Bruce Lee be into Hiphop?

I personally think it's right up his alley, he would have loved the Hiphop kulture, Break Dancin could have probably been a element that he would of found quite easy to master.
I couldn't really see him as a DJ, but as an Emcee maybe, his philosophies are very similar and resonate with the Hiphop spirit. I think Mista Lee radiated Hiphop, he would have been down for the cause without a doubt.

12 Things You Never Knew About Bruce Lee.

1. Lee used to play Mahjong (a Chinese gambling game, a more complicated version of Dominoes) with Shaw Brothers' actor David Blood Brothers Chiang. While planning to make his directorial debut, Chiang wanted to use the exterior of Bruce's house in Cumberland Road. He spent the 20th of July, the day of Lee's death, looking for Bruce. As this was in the pre-mobile phone/pager era, he couldn't find Lee. It was he who told the press that Bruce Lee definitely didn't die at home.

2. Contrary to popular belief, Lee did have "real" fights with other martial artists. These prearranged duels, called "Bei Mo", were popular in Hong Kong at that time. Bruce's most memorable encounter was with a Mongolian wrestler named Lau Dai Chun. The fight took place at the home of a police detective. It only lasted a few seconds. Bruce knocked the guy out with one kick to the head.

3. The filming of The Big Boss was delayed when actor/stuntman Lam Ching Ying, later of Mr Vampire fame, was arrested for fighting in Hong Kong.

4. After Lee's death, Betty Ting Pei married to Charles Heung Wah Keung, the head of Win's Film Co., who played "Mr. Dragon" in, God Of Gamblers and had a daughter with him. They subsequently divorced.

5. When The Star newspaper film reviewer, Terry Geary, criticized Lee's acting, Bruce, always ultrasensitive about press coverage, called him to complain, asking why, if he was such a bad actor, he was getting paid so much per film.

6. Bruce Lee's house at 41, Cumberland Road was called "Mui Hok Siu Juk", which means "Plum Crane, Little Bamboo". There was a plaque outside the house with this name on it.

7. Lee's Cantonese nickname was "Saam Gerk Lee". Three Legs Lee. It was a reference to his kicking skills, and to his alleged sexual prowess!

8. Bruce's Japanese style garden featured expensive "ginseng grass", specially imported from Japan. He did most of his own gardening, mowing the lawn barefoot.

9. None of the Lee brothers, Pete, Bruce and Robert, could crouch down on their heels because of a genetic defect. One of their legs was longer than the other. However, after training himself to balance, Bruce managed to accomplish this.

10. Bruce's poor eyesight meant that he would often narrow avoid being hit by Hong Kong's crazy drivers as he crossed the street. After one such near miss, he engaged in an angry altercation with a truck driver, which ended with Lee grabbing the other man by the nose.

11. In The Way Of The Dragon Bruce whistles a tune as he and Nora Miao walk up the stairs to the apartment, and again when he goes to the boss' headquarters, If you see the Cantonese version, you hear him whistle the tune Siu Lay Fei Do, which was a popular tune at that time. Originally, the films weren't released in Cantonese, but Mandarin. In that version of the film had him whistle another tune, Gum Ting Wui Gah, which was a famous Mandarin song. They had to change it as that song had been banned in Taiwan, because it was to depressing!

12. Assistant cameraman Charles Lowe shot some Super 8 footage of Bruce on the set of The Way Of The Dragon. The extras used to bring instruments and have jam sessions during their lunch hour. Bruce used to dance the Cha-Cha. In one sequence, he's dancing and swinging his double nanchukus. Someone borrowed the film from Lowe and never returned it

An Essay by Bruce Lee

~ Yin and Yang in the Art of Gung Fu ~

The basic structure of gung fu is based on the theory of yin and yang, a pair of mutually complementary forces that act continuously, without cessation, in this universe. The black part of the circle is called yin. Yin can represent anything in the universe: negativeness, passiveness, gentleness, insubstantiality, femaleness, moon, darkness, night, etc. The other complementary part of the circle is yang, which represents positiveness, activeness, firmness, substantiality, maleness, sun, brightness, day, etc.

The common mistake most people make is to identify this yin/yang symbol as dualistic; that is, with yang being the opposite of yin, and vice versa. As long as we separate this “oneness” into two, we won’t achieve realization. Actually, all things have their complementary part; it is only the human mind and perception that they are separated into opposites. The sun is not the opposite of the moon, as they complement and are interdependent on each other, and we cannot survive without either of them.

In a similar way, a male is but the complement of the female; for without the male, how on earth do we know there is female, or vice versa. The oneness of yin/yang is necessary in life. If a person riding a bicycle wishes to go somewhere, he cannot pump on both pedals at the same time or not pump them at all. To move forward, he has to pump one pedal and release the other. So going forward requires this oneness of pumping and releasing. Pumping then is the result of releasing, and vice versa; each being the cause of the other.

In the yin/yang symbol there is white spot on the black part and a black spot on the white part. This illustrates balance in life, for nothing can survive long by going to either extreme, be it negativeness or positiveness. Therefore, firmness must be concealed in gentleness, and gentleness in firmness, and that is why a gung fu man must be pliable as a spring. Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo will bend with the wind. So in gung fu or any other system, one must be gentle yet not giving way completely; be firm yet not hard; and even if he is strong, he should guard it with softness and tenderness. For if there is no softness in firmness, he is not strong.

In a similar way, if one has firmness concealed in softness, no one can break through his defense. This is the principle of moderation provides the best means of preserving oneself, for since we accept this existence of the oneness (yin/yang) in everything and do not treat it dualistically, we thus secure a state of tranquility by remaining detached and not inclining on one extreme, be it negative or positive, we will flow with it in order to control it. This flowing with it without clinging is the true way to get rid of it.

When the movements in yin/yang flow into extremes, reaction sets in. For when yang goes to the extreme, it changes to yin; and when yin (activated by yang) goes to the extreme, it returns back to yang (that is why each one is the result and cause of the other). For example, when a person works to the extreme, he becomes tired and has to rest (from yang to yin). After resting, he can work again (yin back to yang). This changing of yin/yang is always continuous.

The application of the theory of yin/yang in gung fu is known as the law of harmony. It holds that one should be in harmony with, and not against the force of, the opponent. Suppose A applies strength on B. B shouldn’t oppose or give way completely to it, for these are but the two extreme opposites of B’s reaction. Instead, he should complete A’s force with a lesser force and lead him to the direction of his own movement. As the butcher preserves his knife by cutting along the bone and not against it, a gung fu man preserves himself by following the movement of his opponent without opposition or even striving. This spontaneous assisting of A’s movement as he aims it will result in his own defeat.

When a gung fu man finally understands the theory of yin/yang, he no longer fusses with the so-called “ gentleness”
or “firmness”; he simply does what the moment requires him to do. In fact, all conventional forms and techniques are gone; his movements are everyday movements. He doesn’t have to “justify” himself like so many masters have, claiming his spirit or internal power. To him, cultivation of martial art in the long run will return simplicity, and only people of halfway cultivation justify and brag about themselves.

The Mystery of Bruce Lee's Death.

There are many theories to what actually happened to Bruce Lee. My truth goes along similar lines as this article I've posted, mysterious circumstances calls for mysterious answers.

The Mystery of Bruce Lee's Death
By: Jake Seal

Bruce Lee, dressed in the traditional Chinese outfit he wore in the movie Enter The Dragon, was laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery in Seattle in late July of 1973. But long before Lee's sudden and tragic death in a Hong Kong apartment at age 32, rumors were rife throughout the Orient that he had been wounded or killed in fights.

"One day, I got a long-distance call from Hong Kong's largest newspaper," Lee recalled. "They asked me if I was still alive. 'Guess who you are talking to?' I replied."

Thus, when Lee actually did die, speculation abounded as to the cause. The rumors ranged from Lee being killed by Hong Kong triads (gangsters) because he refused to pay them protection money - —something that was common for Chinese movie stars to do at that time —to his being killed by an angry martial artist's dim mak (death touch) strike. Some people claimed Lee was cursed—he had just bought a house in Hong Kong that was supposed to be haunted—or that he had died while mking love to actress Betty Tingpei, or that he had angered the Chinese martial arts community by teaching foreigners, and that he had been killed in a challenge match.

Many Chinese believed Lee was the victim of too much gum Ilk (intensity) in his training, while others cited drug use as the cause for his sudden demise. Still others believed that Lee's fate was sealed at birth, that it was in the stars. And, finally, there are those who think Lee's death was staged, and that he is merely waiting for the right time to return to society.

The facts of the case are this: Lee died after falling into a coma. The coroner's report was inconclusive, and medical authorities came up with five reasons for Lee's untimely death. However, they all agreed that it was caused by a cerebral edema (a swelling of the brain caused by a congestion of fluid). But what caused the edema became a matter of speculation. For the most part, the course of events on that fateful July day in 1973 can be pieced together. According to Lee's wife, Linda, Bruce met film producer Raymond Chow at 2 p.m. at home to discuss the making of Game of Death. They worked until 4 p.m., and then drove together to the home of Betty Tingpei, a Taiwanese actress who was to also have a leading role in the film. The three went over the script at Tingpei's home, and then Chow left to attend a dinner meeting.

A short time later, Lee complained of a headache and Tingpei gave him a tablet of Equagesic—a kind of super sapirin. Apart from that, Lee reportedly consumed nothing but a couple of soft drinks.

At around 7:30 p.m., Lee lay down for a nap and was still asleep when Chow called to ask why he and Tingpei had not yet shown up for dinner as planned. The actress told Chow she could not wake Lee. The ensuing autopsy found traces of cannabis in Lee's stomach, but the significance of this discovery is debatable. Some believe the cannabis caused a chemical reaction that led to the cerebral edema, but the coroner's inquiry refutes this theory. In fact, one doctor was quoted as saying that the cannabis being in Lee's stomach was "no more significant than if Bruce had drunk a cup of tea that day."

Dr. R.R. Lycette of Queen Elizabeth Hospital viewed Lee's death as a hypersensitivity to one or more of the compounds found in the headache tablet he consumed that afternoon. Although his skull showed no injury, his brain had swollen considerably, from 1,400 to 1,575 grams. None of the blood vessels were blocked or broken, so the possibility of a hemorrhage was ruled out. All of Lee's internal organs were meticulously examined, and the only "foreign" substance to be found was the Equagesic.

Chow came to the apartment and could not wake Lee either. A doctor was summoned, and he spent 10 minutes attempting to revive the martial artist before sending him by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. By the time he reached the hospital, Lee was dead .

Foul play was immediately suspected as having a role in Lee's passing. Chow appeared on television to try to settle the public furor that quickly developed. He explained what happened, omitting only the fact that Lee had not died at home. The press soon uncovered the truth, however, and demanded to know what Chow was trying to cover up. R.D. Teare, a professor of forensic medicine at the University of London who had overseen more than 90,000 autopsies, was called in and declared that it was basically impossible for the cannabis to be a factor in Lee's death. In Teare's opinion, the edema was caused by hypersensitivity to either meprobamate or aspirin, or a combination of both. His view was accepted by authorities, and a determination of "misadventure" was stamped on Lee's death.

Strangely, an early death was a conceivability that Lee had contemplated with surprising frequency. According to his wife Linda, he had no wish to live to a ripe old age because he could not stand the idea of losing the physical abilities he had strived so hard to achieve.

"If I should die tomorrow," he used to say, "I will have no regrets. I did what I wanted to do. You can't expect more from life."
